Earthquake & Disaster Preparedness
Preparing for unexpected emergencies is essential at every stage of life, but it requires a more thoughtful approach as we age. Click on the links below to access a few critical preparedness resources tailored specifically for our community to help you stay independent and secure.
First, understanding local hazard management is key to knowing what to expect. The Portland Earthquake Response Plan provides insight into how our city organizes its response to major seismic events and reminds us that local coordination is vital. Building self-reliance before help arrives is a shared responsibility, and the city emphasizes that “Portlanders with resources in their budget should gather supplies sufficient for two weeks.” To make this manageable without straining your budget, the PBEM 24-Week Shopping List breaks down the process of gathering a two-week kit into small, weekly milestones, starting simply with essentials like a “manual can opener” and ready-to-eat foods.
Recognizing that emergencies introduce distinct challenges for seniors, the federal government offers a user-friendly worksheet you can follow to get organized. The Ready.gov Disaster Preparedness Guide for Older Adults will help you “assess your needs, create a plan and engage your network.” These documents are foundational tools meant to empower us, ensuring that our medical, mobility, and communication needs are fully accounted for long before disaster strikes.
